STONE CHISELS AND CARVING

Chisels for carving, cutting, and shaping wood, metal, stone, and other materials. Get to know the hand chisels from Rock and Tools, they are already very useful tools for a wide variety of crafting and construction projects.

Types of chisel: Choosing the right stone carving chisel

The chisel should be chosen depending on what it will be used for, chisels can be classified as follows:

According to their use, they are divided into:

  • Hand chisels: as the name suggests, they are used manually, based on blows with the hammer or the sledgehammer.
  • Chisels used in pneumatic hammers: they are incorporated into pneumatic hammers, you don't need to strike them.

According to the material they are made of:

  • Steel chisels.
  • Tungsten carbide chisels: they have a longer lifespan and allow you to work with harder materials.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS WHEN BUYING HAND CHISELS

Whether you are a professional or just starting and learning, it is normal to have the following doubts:

How do I choose the right stone chisel?

Match the chisel material and shape to your stone and task: steel chisels suit softer stones and detailed work, while tungsten carbide (Widia) chisels hold their edge longer on hard stones like granite. Choose rounded chisels for smoothing, carving chisels for shaping, and lettering chisels for fine inscription work.

What's the difference between steel and tungsten carbide (Widia) chisels?

Steel chisels are more affordable and easy to re-sharpen, ideal for soft to medium stones such as limestone or marble. Tungsten carbide chisels keep their edge far longer on hard, abrasive stones like granite, at a higher upfront cost.

Can I use a hand chisel with a pneumatic hammer?

No — hand chisels are struck manually with a mallet, while pneumatic chisels have a different shank designed to fit a pneumatic hammer. If you work with a pneumatic hammer, see our dedicated pneumatic chisels range instead.

How many chisels do I need to get started?

For most beginners, one rounded, one carving and one lettering chisel in steel is enough to start. As projects get more demanding — harder stone, finer detail — you can add tungsten carbide chisels to the set.
