3 of Michelangelo Buonarroti's lesser-known works

3 de las obras menos conocidas de Miguel Ángel Buonarroti

Michelangelo was a true genius in all the arts he chose to try and work in, however, as you may already know, sculpture was his great passion.

Michelangelo Buonarroti rose to fame for his works for the Popes of Rome, most notably the Sistine Chapel. But today we're going to talk about three of his lesser-known sculptures.

Sculptures unknown until 2015

These are two polychrome wood works dating from 1494 and presented to the public in 2015 in very good condition. After confirming the creation period and comparing the stylistic elements, experts had no doubt that this was a work by the Italian artist.

The Madonna of Bruges

This sculpture depicting the Virgin Mary and the child Jesus is the only work by the artist that left Italy during his lifetime. The image represents the moment when Jesus leaves his mother's lap to begin his own mission on earth.

Piedad Rondanini

At the end of his life, Buonarotti produced several works in the unfinished style, including this one we're showing you, which he worked on until his dying days. Throughout the work, we can perceive the figure's struggle to navigate through the material, between the finished and the unfinished.
