How to properly maintain your tools

Cómo llevar un buen mantenimiento de las herramientas

Both hand and power tools require essential maintenance at home. Keeping them in good condition is essential to ensure the investment we make in them is truly profitable and to ensure we can enjoy them for as long as possible. That's why today we want to give you all the tips you need to ensure the best possible maintenance of the tools you own.

Basic tips on tool maintenance

Keeping all our tools clean and well-organized is, as we said, a fundamental part of ensuring they function properly for many years to come. And isn't that precisely what we want? I'm sure it is. We all aspire to make our favorite tools last as long as possible and not have to replace them too soon. To achieve this:

  • After each use, gently wipe all tool handles made of wood with a wood protectant.
  • Don't use any metal tool as a hammer. Use only a hammer for this purpose.
  • Once a year or so, replace or sharpen the blades on all your cutting tools.

These are some of the most basic and general tips for properly maintaining your tools. Now let's move on to some more specific tips to ensure they're top-notch.

Care for storing your tools

It may not seem obvious, but it's not only important to use tools properly when we need them, but it's also essential to treat them properly when we're done using them. In other words, how we store our tools is a step that will determine whether they're properly maintained or not over the years.

If you have a place to hang your tools, it's best to store them this way. Why? Because it prevents their components from being damaged by unnecessary friction and/or having to bear the weight of other tools on top. But if you don't have a place to hang them, or it's not big enough for all your tools, don't worry; their own box is more than enough to keep them well-kept.

If you don't have the original box and prefer to store all your tools in a single box or some kind of trunk, we recommend wrapping the most delicate tools in bubble wrap before storing them. Make sure there's no moisture in the box or trunk, as this could damage certain parts of your tools, especially those made of steel or other metal alloys. You can place several bags of rice inside to absorb the moisture so you don't have to worry about this.

Tips for maintaining tools based on their use

Additionally, you'll need to consider the type and use of the different tools you use when performing maintenance. Shall we get to it?

  • Tools such as mallets, hammers, and any other tools used to apply force to another tool or material require constant checking before use to ensure they are securely fastened.
  • Measuring tools, especially those containing elements like spirit levels, should not be placed in high humidity and should not be stacked on top of each other to prevent damage or breakage.
  • Cutting tools, as we mentioned earlier, should be sharpened from time to time to ensure they always work properly. But it's also important to protect their blades with rubber guards when storing them to prevent chipping.

Tips for maintaining tools based on their material

Another important point to keep in mind for proper tool maintenance is to pay special attention to the material they are made of.

Therefore, tools made of steel or metal, or that have any parts made of these materials, are at risk of rusting, as we've already mentioned. If this happens, it's best to sand them with medium-grit sandpaper, but since prevention is the best solution, avoid leaving your tools in humid places at all costs, following the advice we've mentioned in the previous points.

As for wooden tools, you can keep them clean and cared for with specific wood products or vegetable oils such as linseed oil.
