Art and sculpture as a means of communication

El arte y la escultura como medio de comunicación

Art is an activity through which humans can express their ideas and feelings. Therefore, it's not so strange to think that art is actually another means of communication that allows us to communicate what words sometimes wouldn't allow us to. Let's explore this topic in more detail. Will you join us?

What is art?

The RAE defines art as 'the human activity that aims to create cultural works'; although other meanings also refer to its aesthetic and communicative purpose, through which ideas, emotions, and a worldview are expressed. Thus, and ultimately, Art helps us say something about ourselves or about what we think .

Sculpture is one of those arts through which different artists have captured their ideas for more than 20 centuries. But it's not just professional artists who can use it; we all have the opportunity to express ourselves through visual, linguistic, sonic, corporal, and mixed means, even if the result is never exhibited in a museum.

What is communication?

We are stating that art is a means of communication, and therefore, we are going to give a brief outline of what communication is defined as.

Humans generally live in society and, therefore, have the ability to communicate with others through different means such as words, colors, sounds, shapes, movements, etc. In general, two types of communication can be distinguished: verbal and nonverbal.

Communication through sculpture (and other arts such as painting, architecture, or photography) would be included within what we know as nonverbal communication, since volumes and shapes would be the main resource used.

Why do we say that art is a means of communication?

Works of art, such as sculptures, are created with an intention behind them; artists design and sculpt them to convey an idea: love, passion, suffering, loss... Perhaps one of the details that makes it difficult to understand art as a means of communication is that each viewer, depending on their analytical and reasoning skills, as well as their knowledge of the context in which the work was created and influenced by their own experiences, will interpret it in a completely unique way. In fact, it's quite likely that if two people stop to look at the same piece of art, they won't receive exactly the same message.

But, in addition to speaking to us about feelings, art is capable of telling us what reality was like in earlier times. Not only because some artists portrayed what those societies were like, but also because the materials they used and how they used them also tell us a lot about them.

In fact, many sculptures or buildings tell us exactly what period they belong to with small details, such as the type of ornamentation or techniques used. In this way, art tells us, without words, about the reality and concerns of both artists and society.
