What is art?

Why do we say that art is a means of communication?

Perhaps one of the details that makes it difficult to understand art as a means of communication is that each viewer, depending on their analytical and reasoning skills, as well as their knowledge of the context in which the work was created and influenced by their own experiences, will interpret it in a completely unique way. In fact, it's quite likely that if two people stop to look at the same piece of art, they won't receive exactly the same message.
But, in addition to speaking to us about feelings, art is capable of telling us what reality was like in earlier times. Not only because some artists portrayed what those societies were like, but also because the materials they used and how they used them also tell us a lot about them.
