Stone splitting Wedge & Shim

Splitter / Separator Wedges Shims

Splitting wedges, also called expanders or expanders, are used to split larger stones into two parts.

These separating wedges are made up of 3 pieces, 2 side wings (which must be inserted into the hole that we have made with the drill) and a central piece, which is the piece that is struck with the hammer.

It is recommended to use several wedges to split a stone, they must be distributed along the stone, normally the wedges are placed with a distance of one hand from each other, although technically a wedge can be placed every length of their distance, that is, that if the wedge is 20cm long, 20cm will be the maximum distance between each wedge.

The wedges can start at a maximum of three times their length (here the hardness of the stone and different factors influence). For example, the 20cm wedge will split a maximum 60cm high stone.
