The strangest and most striking statues in Spain

Las estatuas más raras y llamativas de España

It's clear that art has no limits and its value always depends on the eyes that behold it. Despite this, there are certain works that we can describe as, at the very least, curious or striking. We don't know exactly what the artistic intention of the statues we're going to discuss below was, but what we do know is that they are extremely peculiar. If you're interested, we'll discuss some of the strangest statues in Spain.

The Mazinger Z of Tarragona

This spectacular 10-meter-high statue of the Japanese robot stands at the entrance to a residential area in Cabra del Camp (Tarragona). It was erected in 1979 as part of the promotion and attraction for a new residential area, although it's not entirely clear why they decided to use Mazinger Z specifically as part of the sales strategy. Nowadays, the Mazinger Z Friends Meeting is held every year. How curious is that?

The peacocks of Jaén

These unique peacocks found at the University of Jaén roundabout are, without a doubt, some of the most unusual monuments you'll see in our country. The works are made from recycled urban and construction materials (fences, traffic signs, excavator blades, pipes, cones, etc.). They consist of one with an open tail and another with a closed tail. In 2010, coinciding with the Day of the Holy Innocents, two eggs appeared, and two years later, two tiny turkeys were "hatched." However, a few years later, one of the two turkeys appeared headless, so the artist decided to remove them, leaving only the "adult" turkeys.

The Culis Monumentalibus of Oviedo

Yes, its name is the clue you need to know what this work is about. It's located in front of the Campoamor Theater in Oviedo and represents gigantic buttocks on both sides. This sculpture, along with more than 100 other sculptures, was purchased by the city council to turn the city into an open-air museum.
